Veteran is a comedy in which the experienced detective Seo do-Cheol and the young arrogant Chaobolis heir Jo Tae-Oh, who is involved in various criminal activities, collide with each other. The film is full of fast-paced action, but what sets it apart is its humor and the subtle way it handles social commentary about the corruption of the rich. Hwang Jung-min’s portrayal of the indefatigable detective is fantastic and brings the intensity of the humor to the role. The walls of battle and persecution are energetic and keep the audience in the shot. What makes Veteran especially enjoyable is the tension between SEOM and JO. While SEO represents justice and arrogance, Joe embodies the legitimate, easy-going elite who think they’ll get away with anything. The film subtly criticizes the power imbalance in society and is still a thrilling ride full of great fight choreography. The combination of action and a moral message makes it one of the most exceptional Korean action films of the decade.
