The Maynards and their children lead an almost ideal billionaire family life. I saw it at the Sundance Film Festival in 2024. Director Daniel Hösl and Julian Niemann clearly have an interesting satirical take on the wealthy class, and while it has some good ideas, it feels underdeveloped and not as powerful as it appears in the film. Throughout the film, the production, cinematography and color rendering are superb and truly beautiful as they help convey the atmosphere and essence of the characters. Hoesl and Niemann’s instructions, while a little messy, have a clear idea of what style and atmosphere they’re approaching. Many performances are good, but some children’s performances are weak. The narrative is a good concept, but unfortunately it feels as strong as it seems because the narrative feels underdeveloped and I don’t like some of the themes and characters; As if he had good ideas that didn’t really reach their desired potential. There are certain moments that are shocking, sharp and quite strange, and I understand where the creators of the film and their vision were coming from. But it doesn’t feel fully deserved, and the style feels too similar to something like Ruben Ostlund or Michael Haneke. In general, it’s not bad, there are some moments that I shade. But it could be stronger.
